BECOME A PART OF OUR FAMILY

New Kingdom Christian Ministries is an outgrowth of a vision developed to carry out God’s vision, divine purpose, and plan. The vision was laid upon the heart of our founder and pastor, the late Reverend Dr. Leonidas B. Young II. This visionary was divinely inspired to lay a foundation of Christian fellowship, a place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ could be ministered and applied. The name was implanted into the spirit of founding member, Carolyn Hughes; and the New Kingdom Christian Ministries’ Creed was inspired by way of God’s anointing through Sister Rosalyn Johnson.
Pastor Young was charged with finding a place to begin his ministry. In this union of fellowship, the founding members began meeting at the home of his parents, Leonidas, Sr. and Cora Young. In these humble beginnings, Pastor Young grew several ministries and appointed various faithful members to serve the flock.

After months of planning meetings, Rev. Young’s first sermon as Pastor of New Kingdom Christian Ministries, “How to Handle a Crisis,” was given during the commencement service and communion on Resurrection Sunday, April 4, 1999, at the Richmond Centre. As a result of Pastor Young and members’ faith and endurance, New Kingdom Christian Ministries (NKCM) was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in December 1999.
Unfortunately, for a span of approximately two years, Pastor Young was forced away from the pulpit. In his absence, God positioned other spiritual leaders who would serve in his place and care for his ministry. Reverend Darius Smith, of Baltimore, Maryland, stood in the gap for over 18 months, and Rev. E. Bernard Conley faithfully led Bible Study in the spirit of love. Other spiritual fathers who also encouraged, cared for, and provided covering for New Kingdom Christian Ministries include Rev. Steven Banks, who was the shepherd of our shepherd, and his Living Waters Christian Ministries parish; Pastor Kevin Harris of Victory Tabernacle Baptist Church; and Bishop Gerald O. Glenn of New Deliverance Evangelistic Church.  With their help and faithful service, NKCM was able to sustain until Pastor Young’s return to the pulpit on October 1, 2000.

Our worship services during this season were held at Onslow Minnis Middle School and John Marshall High School in Richmond. Bible Study was held at the homes of several church members until God blessed us with another location, 1202 Oak Street, Richmond, Virginia. Continued blessings were bestowed with the purchase and dedication of administrative offices on North Avenue on December 24, 2000.

In the Spring of 2001, New Kingdom Christian Ministries was blessed to purchase our first Worship Center, located at 111 Stuttaford Drive in Sandston, Virginia. This indeed marked the favor of God upon His church.
Although we dare not try to list the names of those whose touch-enabled NKCM to remain steadfast, thank God for the strength and wisdom of the first Elders — Jerome Barley, Gloria S. Elam, Carolyn Y. Hughes, Carolyn W. Jacobs, Barbara W. Turner, Bernadette Williams, and Leonidas B. Young, Sr. They were ordained on Sunday, September 16, 2001.
Grateful thanks for the first Mothers of the Church: Helen Corbin, Harriet Grant, Hazel Joyner, Mary Laws, Bernice Lewis, Dorothy Troublefield, and Cora Young.

Through 2007, NKCM flourished in the Sandston community; however, as the culture changed so did the ministry.
A desire to minister in the urban community was realized, moving NKCM to Richmond’s Northside. On Sunday, April 20, 2008, the first worship service was held at the 3200 Dill Avenue location.
In November 2015, Rev. Young, the visionary that he was, selected Rev. Christopher L. Moore to fill in during his illness.

The New Kingdom Christian Ministries family was thrust into a most difficult situation on January 16, 2016, when the beloved founder and visionary, Rev. Dr. Leonidas B. Young II, transitioned from his earthly home. Following his death, the NKCM congregation unanimously confirmed Rev. Christopher L. Moore as Pastor at a January 31, 2016, special call meeting.

Twenty years later, New Kingdom Christian Ministries continues reaching out with Christ’s love to hurting people, and God isn’t through yet. With Pastor Chris Moore at the helm, New Kingdom Christian Ministries will continue Rev. Young’s vision to fruition as we embark on our new journey and a new beginning.
“All things are possible through Christ Jesus who strengthens us.”
